Ocean Research & Exploration

The ocean covers most of the planet, and large stretches of the deep sea have never been seen by a person or a camera.

It’s hard to protect a place nobody has looked at. The Gilfoyle Foundation funds the scientists who go and look, and makes sure what they bring back is shared widely enough to do some good.

Go Where No One Has Looked

Grant programs tend to favor a predictable payoff. A first look at an unmapped seafloor rarely has one.

We fund expeditions to places science hasn’t reached yet, because a baseline record of what’s there is worth having before anyone needs it.

Turn Findings Into Protection

Knowing what lives somewhere is the first step; knowing whether it’s holding up is the second.

We support long-term monitoring that tracks how marine habitats and species change over years, so the people managing them work from measurements instead of guesses.

Share the Data

An expedition’s footage and measurements are worth far more once other scientists can use them.

Every project we fund publishes its data openly, so one team’s dive can feed a dozen studies it never planned for.
